Gastroenterology Fellowship

Gastroenterology Fellowship

The Gastroenterology Fellowship at United Health Services Hospitals, established in 2018, is fully accredited by the ACGME and sponsored by the Internal Medicine Residency program. It is a 3-year program that accepts 1-2 fellows per year. Our goal is to provide advanced education to allow our fellows to acquire competency in Gastroenterology with sufficient expertise to eventually act as an independent consultant.

GI Fellows will be working in the inpatient settings at both Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City and Binghamton General Hospital in Binghamton. GI Labs are located at both sites, which are equipped to provide modern capability in gastrointestinal procedures. The outpatient office, located at Binghamton General Hospital, allows the GI fellows to provide comprehensive care of patients.

The Gastroenterology Department at UHS performs well beyond 10,000 procedures every year. These include upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, esophageal dilation, feeding tube placement, and liver biopsy. Our department also offers more specialized procedures to our community, including ERCP, EUS (diagnostic and therapeutic), EMR, HRM, impedance PH monitoring, capsule endoscopy, fibroscan, cyst gastrostomy, etc.

Program Highlights:

  • Wilson Medical Center is a high-tech, regional referral and level 2 trauma center
  • An extensive and diverse patient population
  • Solid, well established base residency programs
  • Weekly lectures, grand rounds, board reviews, and M&M conference
  • Research experience provided through the outpatient office and UHS Office of Clinical Trials and IRB
  • Involvement in multiple institutional committees
  • Faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Instructor of SUNY Upstate Medical University
  • Training in hepatic pathology for the understanding and management of liver diseases
