For Investigators

The UHS Hospitals (UHSH) Center for Research at UHS supports investigators engaged in clinical, translational, and collaborative research. Whether you are new to research or a seasoned investigator, we provide guidance, infrastructure, and administrative support to help move your study from concept to completion.

Getting Started with Research at UHSH

We welcome clinical and administrative staff who are interested in conducting research. To begin:

  • Review eligibility to serve as Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Meet with the Research Program Manager for an orientation
  • Submit a study concept or protocol draft for early feedback
  • Complete required CITI training and documentation
  • Connect with IRB and support staff for submission assistance

We recommend early communication with the research office to ensure your project is feasible and well-supported.

Study Planning and Submission

The Research Office can help you with:

  • Protocol development and templates
  • Feasibility and impact review
  • Budget and funding strategy (if applicable)
  • Guidance on IRB forms and institutional policies

Our goal is to streamline your workflow while ensuring all regulatory and operational standards are met.

Regulatory and Ethical Oversight

Research at UHSH is subject to oversight by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which ensures the protection of human participants and regulatory compliance.

We provide:

  • IRB guidance and assistance with protocol and consent preparation
  • Conflict of Interest disclosure procedures
  • Help with determining exempt, expedited, or full-board review
  • Access to IRB templates and FAQs

The IRB is committed to timely, transparent, and collaborative review of all research protocols.

Support Services

Investigators at UHS can access support including:

  • Research coordination
  • Data management tools
  • Regulatory submissions
  • Study logistics and planning

For more details, see the Research Administration & Support Services section.

Research Matching with Medical Students

UHSH investigators can connect with medical students from Upstate Medical University who are interested in gaining research experience. Investigators may post brief project descriptions on a dedicated matching platform where students can review and reach out directly.

This service encourages collaboration, builds mentorship opportunities, and supports UHSH research growth.

Research Opportunity Platform

Investigators interested in posting an opportunity may contact us at research@nyuhs.org and learn more at the Upstate University Binghamton Clinical Campus page.

Expedited Pathway for Low-Risk Research

To improve turnaround time for ethical and legal review, UHS offers an expedited pathway for certain categories of low-risk research. Examples include use of de-identified biospecimens, such as blood or urine that would otherwise be discarded as medical waste.

The expedited pathway is designed to:

Accelerate research timelines
Facilitate collaboration with academic and industry partners
Reduce barriers for minimal-risk studies

This program aligns with our mission to be a nimble and ethical research partner.
