BINGHAMTON, NY – UHS has acquired the brand new da Vinci 5 surgical system for robotic-assisted surgery, becoming the first hospital in Greater Binghamton to use this advanced technology in a surgical procedure.

“We are thrilled to be among the first health systems in our region to acquire the da Vinci 5,” said John M. Carrigg, president and chief executive officer of UHS. “Our surgeons have extensive experience in robotic-assisted, minimally-invasive surgery and this new tool reflects our commitment to providing high-quality care for our patients in Greater Binghamton and beyond.”

The arrival of the da Vinci 5 marks a significant investment in the future of surgical care at UHS Binghamton General Hospital. Supported by a highly experienced clinical team, quiet and comfortable accommodations, and a strong focus on a seamless patient experience, the hospital continues to provide an environment where patients can feel confident, supported, and assured of outstanding care.

The da Vinci 5 is designed to enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes, offering more than 150 new enhancements that support surgeon autonomy and care‑team efficiency. Its next‑generation platform includes advanced 3D imaging and processing, enabling surgeons to see and feel more during procedures. New surgeon controllers provide smoother, more precise movements, and an optimized user interface streamlines workflow for both surgeons and staff.

“UHS has been using da Vinci technology since 2019, and the da Vinci 5 will help us expand our surgical program and deliver even more advanced care,” said Leonard S. Anderson, MD, Director of Surgery, UHS. “We will continue to use our existing da Vinci systems alongside the new da Vinci 5, which complements our current technology and enables smaller incisions that may reduce recovery time. This system is a step forward in robotic surgery. It allows for smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body during complex procedures.”

As with previous models, the da Vinci 5 can be used across a wide range of minimally invasive surgical procedures. Potential patient benefits include reduced trauma, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, decreased post-operative pain, lower infection risk and minimal scarring.

“At UHS, we continually seek advances in technology to enhance the care we provide,” said Christopher Engler, DO, emergency & trauma surgeon and chair of the Robotics Steering Committee at UHS. “As a Level II trauma center, we treat everything from complex traumas to major cardiac events. The da Vinci 5 system will help us fulfill our mission of improving the health of the communities we serve through compassionate, patient-centered care.”
