Our newest Sunshine Award winner is Caitlyn Sherwood!

A program to recognize the extraordinary care and contributions of our non-licensed nursing support staff continues at UHS with Caitlyn Sherwood, Main Tower 3, UHS Wilson Medical Center, who was named the June winner of the Sunshine Program Award! Caitlyn received the Sunshine Award and a bouquet of sunflowers in recognition of his accomplishments and enjoyed cookies during the celebration.

The Main Tower 3 unit secretary was nominated by a colleague. In the nomination letter, her colleague described how Caitlyn brings heart, dedication and an incredible amount of kindness to the patients, their families and the entire Neuro team. The colleague shared a story about how Caitlyn helped her with a patient who was unable to speak or move independently due to her medical condition. Caitlyn recognized how emotional and frustrated the patient was and took it upon herself to lift her spirits.  She asked the patient about her favorite music, then played "You Are My Sunshine," and sang along with the patient. To the colleague's surprise, the patient sat up and fully opened her eyes for the first time and started mouthing the lyrics with Caitlyn. Caitlyn's colleague described this moment as a powerful and tangible reminder of why they do what they do.

"What is even more amazing is that Caitlyn's acts of empathy and kindness are not rare. She has the sort of personality and strength that lifts everyone's spirit," said the nominating colleague. "It has been an absolute pleasure to work with her the few times I have. If I need anything, she is someone who will offer a helping hand without condition. She never looks for recognition, but without a doubt deserves it."

Patients, families, and colleagues are able to nominate any of our non-licensed support staff based on our UHS Values of Respect, Teamwork, Innovation, Trust, and especially Compassion. Nominations will be collected via paper - look for nomination kiosks and boxes at all UHS locations, via email at sunshine.awards@nyuhs.org, and electronically.

All nominees will be recognized, but each month, one nominee will be selected for a special recognition.
