Our latest DAISY Award winner is Richard Langstaff!
May 28, 2025
A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Richard Langstaff, LPN, UHS Primary Care Sidney, being named the April winner of the DAISY Award! Richard was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.
The Primary Care nurse was nominated by a colleague who works closely with Rich every day. In the nomination letter, his colleague wrote about how Rich goes above and beyond for not only his pediatric patients, but his co-workers as well. Every day, Rich comes in with a smile and always puts the children first, working to make sure they feel as comfortable as possible with gestures like checking vitals on dolls, trying to put a smile on a patient's face or dishing out high-fives.
The letter goes on to talk about how Rich is a wealth of knowledge, always willing to share what he knows with his co-workers, or going out of his way to research something when he doesn’t have the answer, creating a highly informed and collaborative work environment.
"He wants his patients to remember the good at the doctors and not feel scared to come when they are sick or in need of something. Rich also provides tons of knowledge and information to every patient and family. He listens and he cares," said his nominating colleague. "Rich is a wonderful role model for the Sidney pediatric office. He deserves to be recognized for all the hard work, effort and smiles he brings into his work environment day in and day out."
Thank you to Richard for displaying such Compassion, Teamwork and Respect toward your patients and colleagues, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.
Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
