UHS has expanded the DAISY Award Program to include an annual team award, bestowed every year during National Nurses Week. This year, the DAISY Team Award was awarded to the Memorial 3 team at UHS Binghamton General Hospital!
The team was nominated by a colleague, who recognized them for their commitment to excellence, compassion, and innovative care as they transformed their nursing practice over the year to better meet the individualized needs of their patients.
In her nomination letter, the colleague praised the team for the resilience and unity they demonstrated as they successfully developed and implemented a team-based model for the delivery of nursing care. Key components of this transformation included learning and integrating the LPN scope of practice within their daily workflow, and successfully navigating changes in task sharing, assignments, and documentation processes.
The impact of the team’s work has been reflected in improved quality indicators and patient outcomes. The Memorial 3 team recently achieved 95 consecutive days fall free, as patients benefited from more coordinated care, enhanced communication among their caregivers, and a more supportive and engaged nursing team at their bedside.
“Despite entering this journey during a period of great uncertainty, the team not only adapted – they prospered, strengthened their professional bonds, and fully embraced a collaborative approach that elevated the care environment for both patients and staff,” the nominating colleague wrote. “Their compassion for patients, commitment to each other, and willingness to innovate make them incredibly deserving of the DAISY Team Award. Their journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved when a team comes together with purpose, resilience, and heart.”
Thank you to the Memorial 3 team for displaying such Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, and Innovation, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"
Honoring a team
UHS has been honoring our nurses by presenting the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award, an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day.
The DAISY Foundation was established by Mr. Barnes’ family members after he died from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown by the nurses. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
DAISY recognizes that while achieving better patient and family outcomes may start with one individual, it often takes an entire team to implement such advances successfully. The team award is designed to honor collaboration by a team that goes above and beyond the traditional nursing role to deliver kind and compassionate care.
Nominations encouraged
Nominations are submitted using a form found on nyuhs.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse especially displayed.
