Program Requirements

  • Your referred candidate must be hired and meet the qualifications listed here for you to receive your payment.
  • Applicants must not be currently employed by any UHS entity.
  • Former employees must have a break in service of 12 months to be considered a new hire as part of the referral bonus program.
  • The applicant must be hired into a budgeted position of 0.6 FTE (24 hours per week) or greater and be budgeted at least that many hours at the time of each bonus payment. For example, if your referred candidate leaves UHS or drops below 0.6 FTE before you receive your second bonus payment, you will not be paid that second installment.

How to get credit for your referral

The applicant must list you as an Employee Referral on the Applicant Source portion of the employment application. When speaking with your referred candidate, but sure to tell them about this important step.

Employees will be eligible to collect a referral bonus if the candidate listed you as a referral and an offer was made on March 1, 2022 or later.

Team UHS Referral Bonus Program FAQs

Program Strategy

Why is UHS launching this referral program?

As we look to boost our staffing efforts, we have a workforce of 6,000 ambassadors that could use their networks to help reduce our vacancies. Many employees have referred applicants to UHS in the past. We want to encourage all of our employees to consider referring candidates and reward them for recommending successful new hires.

Why are the referral amounts varied across positions?

Because this is a System-wide program, each referral amount has been determined in consultation with senior leaders at each entity based on staffing needs and budgetary considerations. Higher bonuses are typically available for positions that are facing market competition and relying heavily on travelling staff. The Team UHS Referral Bonus Program is meant to help strategically recruit regular staff into critical positions—the more critical the need and the more experience a candidate has, the higher the bonus amount becomes.

How long will UHS run the referral program and how will I know if there are changes?

The Team UHS Referral Bonus Program will be monitored for effectiveness and changes to its design will be made over time. The information on the UHS employee intranet at the time the candidate submits their job application will determine the criteria and eligibility for your bonus.

About the Referred Candidate

Does my referral have to be hired for me to qualify for a bonus?

Yes. If your referred candidate is hired, you will be notified by Human Resources.

My referral only wants to work per diem. Will I still be able to receive a referral bonus?

No. Job applicants must be hired into a position budgeted for 0.6 FTE (24 hours per week) or greater for you to quality for a referral bonus.

If my referred new hire changes their FTE level before I received a bonus payment, does my bonus amount change?

That depends. If the new hire is still at an FTE level of 0.6 or greater, there is no change and you will receive your bonus payment. If your referral drops below 0.6 or changes to per diem, you will not receive your scheduled bonus payment.

About the UHS Employee Making a Referral

Who is eligible to refer candidates?

Any UHS employee at any entity may refer candidates to any position across the UHS System with the exception of employees who are directly involved with the hiring process for a particular candidate (e.g. the hiring manager, their manager, and HR recruiters).

How many referrals can I make?

Employees may make as many referrals as they wish. The will receive bonus payments for each successfully hired candidate that meets all eligibility requirements.

Are referral bonuses taxed?

Yes. All bonuses are considered income and are subject to tax withholding at the bonus pay rate as determined by state and federal regulations.

About the Referral Process

What is the process for submitting an employee referral?

In order to get credit for your referral, the candidate must list your name and department in the “Applicant Source” section of their employment application by choosing by “Employee Referral.” The team member who referred the applicant does not need to do anything.

Can I still receive a bonus if my referral doesn't list my name on their application?

No. In order to ensure fair and consistent administration of the Team UHS Referral Bonus Program is to require all referrals to be documented on the candidate’s job application.

If my referral is hired, when will I get my bonus payment?

Bonus payments will be reflected in employees’ paychecks as outlined below.

  • For bonuses of $1,000 or more: Payments are made in two equal installments—the first after 90 days of employment and the second after 12 months of employment
  • For bonuses less than $1,000 and greater than $250: Paid in full after six months of employment
  • For bonuses of $250 or less: Paid in full after 90 days of employment
