UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Senior Living, Inpatient Rehab receive 5 star rating

May 24, 2019

Two units at UHS Chenango Memorial have been acknowledged for the high quality of care they provide by the federal agency charged with overseeing nursing homes.

Both UHS Senior Living at Chenango Memorial and the hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation unit received five stars in the most recent ranking by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

“Receiving this five star rating acknowledges and validates the high quality of care we provide our residents, as well as our short term rehab patients,” said Administrator Ronald Cerow, Administrator, UHS Senior Living at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.

According to Cerow, CMH’s five star ratings are particularly notable as CMS recently announced changes to their quality rating system, which issues ratings for over 15,000 nursing homes around the country.

“When those changes were announced, CMH warned us that many facilities would see a decline in their star ratings,” he explained. “That was not the case for us here at CMH.”

Chenango Memorial is the only facility in Chenango County to receive a 5 star rating.

Cerow oversees both the long-term care and short-term rehabilitation units, which are located on the hospital’s second floor. He credited the staff of the two units and their commitment to quality and safety for the 5 Star designations.

“Our residents thrive because they are comfortable in this safe and caring environment,” said Cerow. “Our staff ensures that that each individual achieves and maintains the highest level of wellness and independence possible.”

Cerow is particularly encouraged by the high marks given to the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit, which offers focused attention in a safe, monitored environment to help patients ease back into everyday life after an illness or surgical procedure.

“Short term rehabilitation is one of our newest service lines, so to receive a 5 star rating is very exciting for us,” he said.

What sets the hospital’s program apart is the integration with other hospital-based an ancillary services.

“We offer an interdisciplinary program that brings together doctors, care providers and family members to help people get back to the activities they love,” he said. “The location within the hospital adds a level of both confidence and convenience to the care we provide in that crucial recovery period.”

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital is a member of the United Health Services, a locally owned not-for-profit 916-bed hospital and health care system serving the Greater Binghamton region from more than 40 locations around New York’s Southern Tier.
