UHS hosts “Wear Red” event to raise awareness of women’s heart health
UHS, in partnership with the American Heart Association, will host a “National Wear Red Day” event on Friday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at the UHS Salanger Outpatient Center, 4417 Vestal Parkway East. Members of the media are welcome to attend. For details, contact Amy Shaw, Director of UHS Communications and Marketing, at 607-762-2336.
Community members across Greater Binghamton will wear red—dresses, sweaters, socks, and ties—on Feb. 6 to support “National Wear Red Day,” the nation’s largest annual event dedicated to raising awareness about women and heart disease.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in the main lobby of the UHS Salanger Outpatient Center as part of the American Heart Association’s nationwide “Go Red for Women” campaign. This special day is presented by UHS in collaboration with the regional American Heart Association office.
Featured speakers include John M. Carrigg, President and CEO of UHS; UHS patient, Katharine Luther, sharing her personal journey; her provider, Kristen Lewis, FNP, of the UHS Heart & Vascular Institute; and Jami Wood, Vice President of Development for the American Heart Association.
This year’s event will spotlight the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the health benefits of pet companionship through “Best Friend Fridays.” UHS will donate CPR training kits to local high schools and youth sports programs.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States, responsible for one in three deaths each year. The good news: most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through education and healthy lifestyle changes. The “Go Red for Women” campaign serves as a catalyst for change, empowering women to take charge of their heart health.
