UHS performs 50th Focused Ultrasound procedure
July 28, 2025
The UHS Neurosurgery team recently performed its 50th Focused Ultrasound treatment for essential tremor. This significant milestone marks 50 patients receiving life-changing treatment to relieve the symptoms of essential tremor with a cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedure. Focused Ultrasound uses sound waves guided by MRI to treat the source of the tremor with no incisions or permanent implants.
Essential tremor is a neurological condition characterized by uncontrollable shaking for brief periods of time on one or both sides of the body. Symptoms can worsen with time and during purposeful movement, such as cooking, writing, or driving. Despite the fact that it is estimated to affect approximately 2% of the population, the condition often goes undiagnosed, and about one-third of those living with it never receive treatment.
Even those who are diagnosed may face obstacles when it comes to effective treatment. Some essential tremor patients do not respond to or tolerate medications, or find their medication decreases in effectiveness over time. For those patients, Focused Ultrasound is a treatment option that may benefit their condition.
“It is a profound experience witnessing firsthand the almost immediate, life-changing results this procedure has for patients,” said Simone Betchen, MD, MBA, chief of Neurosciences, UHS Neurosurgery. “Individuals who have been living with essential tremor and struggling to find a treatment that worked for them may have given up hope or felt they were out of options. Focused Ultrasound gives them a second chance to experience a life where they can return to doing the things that they enjoy doing on a daily basis.”
UHS is the first and only healthcare system in Upstate New York to offer incisionless Focused Ultrasound treatment for Essential Tremor and Tremor-Dominant Parkinson’s Disease. Prior to UHS offering this technology, patients had to travel long distances to major metropolitan cities, such as New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia for treatment. The technology at UHS uses the latest and most advanced version of Focused Ultrasound technology available, providing higher image quality, more precise targeting and reduced procedure times. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, requiring no hospital stays or anesthesia.
“Reaching this milestone within the first year of offering Focused Ultrasound at UHS is a strong testament to the need for a truly life-changing treatment for essential tremor patients,” said Prakash Ramanathan, director of Clinical Operations and Neuroscience Services at UHS. “UHS is proud to be a leader in providing the latest and most advanced neuroscience technology and treatment options for patients in Upstate New York.”
In March, UHS shared the incredible story of patient Richard Kircher, who was experiencing debilitating tremors that impacted his ability to complete everyday tasks – until he made the life-altering decision to undergo Focused Ultrasound treatment at UHS. At UHS, it is important to us to ensure more people learn about this life-changing treatment option. Focused Ultrasound is accessible to a wide range of patients, with no upper age limit for treatment. The procedure is covered by Medicare, New York State Medicaid, and most private insurers, reducing financial barriers for those seeking relief.
