UHS Pediatrics Binghamton unveils renovated space
May 23, 2025
On May 22, the UHS Foundation hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at UHS Pediatrics Binghamton, commemorating its newly renovated space. The event included the dedication of a new plaque, speeches from leaders involved in the project, a reception and tours of the renovated practice.
Discussions and conceptual development began in 2018 to modernize the space and improve some of its infrastructure, which had not been updated since the practice was first established at UHS Binghamton General Hospital in 1990.
Beginning in 2022, construction went through several phrases before completion of the project in 2024. Renovations were extensive, including all new ceilings and floors, repainting all walls, and installing new windows for improved energy efficiency and aesthetics.
The Engineering team also worked directly with the Pediatrics staff on how to improve workflow and the layout of exam rooms by repositioning sinks, workstations, and exam tables. The new, open design of the exam rooms allows physicians and practitioners to have more face-to-face interaction with patients and their families.
The renovations have effectively transformed the space into a cleaner, brighter environment that has been uplifting to both patients and staff.
“The updates to our practice have had a tremendous impact on everyone who enters the space,” said Mary DeGuardi, MD, director of UHS Pediatrics. “We are proud to offer an improved, restorative healing environment to our patients, one that brings a sense of calm and joy to the children who come here in need of care. For our providers and staff, we are happy to have a more efficient workspace, where they can truly enjoy coming to work every day.”
Adding to the colorful atmosphere are the new art-pieces decorating spaces throughout the practice. Each painting comes from local artist Wynn Yarrow, and contributes to a restorative environment for all children and families who enter the space.
The project was made possible through the generosity of the UHS Foundation and the Lillian S. Brown Fund. Almost 50 years ago, Lillian Schultz Brown established through her estate a gift to Binghamton General Hospital—a donation of $1.3 million (the equivalent of almost $5 million today) to support Pediatrics at the hospital and contribute to the well-being and happiness of children.
The fund has served this mission over the years, most recently supporting the renovation of the UHS Pediatrics Binghamton office. “The UHS Foundation is proud to contribute to projects such as the renovation of the UHS Pediatrics Binghamton practice,” said Cory Jacobs, executive director of the UHS Foundation. “By beautifying and modernizing this space that serves the needs of families in our community, the Lillian Brown Fund continues to make her wish—to better the lives of children who come to BGH seeking care—a reality.”
