UHS observes Black Balloon Day to commemorate lives lost to overdose

March 06, 2026

On March 6, communities across the United States remember and honor the lives lost to overdose, in what has become known as Black Balloon Day.

The UHS Addiction Medicine team held a Black Balloon Day event on Friday morning featuring a brief ceremony and a moment of silence in remembrance of those our community has lost. The team provided black balloon flyers, offering participants the opportunity to honor loved ones who have died from an overdose.

Black Balloon Day was founded by Diane and Lauren Hurley in memory of Greg Tremblay—a father of four who died from an overdose at age 38.

The annual commemoration raises awareness of the opioid epidemic and encourages conversations about the importance of supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorder, as well as their families and loved ones.
