UHS implements masking in patient-facing areas across all facilities

January 07, 2026

As of Wednesday, January 7, UHS requires masks for patients, visitors, and staff in all patient-facing areas at UHS facilities in response to an increase in flu cases and other respiratory illnesses across our region. These areas include spaces where patients or residents are typically present, such as patient rooms and treatment rooms, nurses’ stations or clinical workstations, hallways and elevators, waiting rooms and lobbies, and common patient areas like cafeterias.

According to the New York State Department of Health, the state reported on Friday the highest number of flu hospitalizations recorded in a single week. “We are having a more severe flu season than prior years, with almost 1,000 more people admitted to hospitals during this most recent seven-day period compared to the prior week,” said Dr. James McDonald, New York State Health Commissioner, on January 2.

New York is among 20 states experiencing “very high” levels of respiratory illness activity, according to the latest CDC data.

To help protect our patients, visitors, and staff, this masking requirement is essential to contain the rapid spread of respiratory illnesses and keep our community healthy.

Free masks are available at facility entry points.

At UHS, the safety and well-being of our patients, visitors, and staff remain our top priority. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation.
