UHS Delaware Valley Hospital's Pennies from Heaven fundraiser is successful

March 10, 2023

Each year, the students of Walton’s Townsend Elementary School help UHS Delaware Valley Hospital by collecting pennies. The annual Pennies From Heaven fundraiser was another success, this year, with 824 lbs. of pennies brought in from all the classes. That will be approximately a total of $1,500 to donate to UHS Delaware Valley Hospital!

This is the 25th year of the fundraiser, which was the idea of longtime DVH Volunteer President, Mary Hunter. She felt it was a good example of community service for the students and she would be proud that the event continues after her passing. The school has collected a phenomenal 25,712 pounds in those 25 years. Through last year, 2022 the total donated equaled an incredible $42,428.57!

“We cannot thank the kids, their families and the administration and staff of Townsend School enough for the generosity that has been shown to us over the years,” said Dotti Kruppo, Director of Community Relations. “We have been able to purchase a great many pieces of minor equipment because of their efforts and support.”

This year’s top winner of the pizza and ice cream party, with 167 pounds of pennies, is Mrs. Condon's kindergarten class.  When Mrs. Condon asked her students what they thought the hospital might need, they had great responses, such as, thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, blankets, pillows, beds, and wheelchairs. They really gave a lot of thought to how their donations can help.

The following classes brought in the most pennies at their grade level, and will receive ice cream treats.

  • UPK: Mrs. Beers’ class with 20 lbs.
  • Kindergarten: Mrs. Dutcher’s class with 40 lbs.
  • 1st grade: Mrs. Wagner’s class with 43 lbs.
  • 2nd grade: Mrs. Evans’ class with 85 lbs.
  • 3rd grade: Mrs. LeBarge’s class with 40 lbs.
  • 4th grade: Mrs. Harrington’s class with 63 lbs.
  • 5th grade: Mrs. Ogden’s class with 60 lbs.
  • Special Education: Mrs.Cetta’s class with 8 lbs.

The pennies have all been taken to the staff at the Wayne Bank in Walton to be counted.
