A program to recognize the extraordinary care and contributions of our non-licensed nursing support staff continues at UHS with Alexandra Hickman, Emergency Department, UHS Binghamton General Hospital, who was named the November winner of the Sunshine Award! Alexandra received the Sunshine Award, along with a bouquet of sunflowers in recognition of her accomplishments, and enjoyed cookies during the celebration.
The nursing assistant was nominated by a colleague. In the nomination letter, the colleague recounts how Alexandra cared for a patient who came into the emergency department with a head laceration. The patient’s hair was matted, and Alexandra spent up to four hours combing the patient’s hair, then taking the patient for a shower and providing them with clothes from the donation bin – truly going above and beyond to ensure the patient received the highest level of care.
“Through the whole encounter, Alexandra really went beyond expectations to provide patient care,” the colleague wrote in the nominating letter. “We all know Alexandra is a team player and has no problem doing her duties and even more. She is truly a model employee.”

Patients, families, and colleagues are able to nominate any of our non-licensed support staff based on our UHS Values of Respect, Teamwork, Innovation, Trust, and especially Compassion. All nominees will be recognized, but each month, one nominee will be selected for a special recognition.
