November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month – a time to support those facing a diagnosis, recognize the warning signs and understand your personal risk. UHS is committed to raising awareness about lung cancer and empowering individuals to build healthier lifestyles.
Eye-Opening Statistics
According to the Lung Cancer Research Group, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. In 2025, over 226,000 new cases are projected in the U.S. Encouragingly, the number of new diagnoses is steadily declining—between 2012 and 2021, incidence rates dropped by 3% in men and 1.4% in women annually. Mortality rates are decreasing even faster, thanks to advances in treatment and early detection.
Early detection is one of the most critical factors in surviving lung cancer. “Most people that have lung cancer don’t have symptoms in the early stages. Our goal is to screen as many high-risk patients as possible, find those asymptomatic nodules, and intervene and diagnose cancer earlier to treat and save lives,” Trevor Flanagan, MHA, BS, RRT, manager of Pulmonary Services at UHS.
