UHS Delaware Valley Hospital offering new diagnostic service in speech-language pathology
August 29, 2025
UHS Delaware Valley Hospital is pleased to announce its Speech-Language Pathology department is now offering Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) as part of its diagnostic services for patients with suspected dysphagia.
What is FEES?
FEES is a minimally invasive, instrumental assessment completed by a trained SLP, that allows for direct visualization of the pharyngeal phase of swallowing using a flexible endoscope passed transnasally. This procedure provides real-time information on secretion management, airway protection, and swallowing function during trials with food and liquid.
;
Benefits of FEES
• Provides real-time visualization of swallowing function
• Identifies aspiration, penetration, and residue
• Assesses laryngeal function, vocal fold movement, and airway protection
• No exposure to radiation (unlike a Modified Barium Swallow)
• Can be performed at bedside or clinic
• Allows evaluation with a variety of real foods and liquids
Risks of FEES
While FEES is generally safe and well-tolerated, some patients may experience:
• Temporary discomfort and irritation during insertion
• Minor nosebleeds if nasal passages are dry
• Coughing, gagging, or sneezing
• Aspiration of food or drink
• Laryngospasm
• Syncope
Who is Appropriate for FEES?
Patients who:
• Have signs/symptoms of dysphagia (swallowing difficulty)
• Are suspected of aspiration
• Need assessment for silent aspiration
• Have voice changes during or after meals
• Require repeat evaluations to monitor progress
• Cannot be transported to radiology for an MBS
Who May NOT Be Appropriate?
Patients with:
• A very sensitive gag reflex
• History of severe nose bleeds
• Severe nasal obstructions or recent nasal surgery
• Severe agitation or inability to cooperate
• Inability to follow directions
• Facial or skull fractures (depending on extent and location)
DVH is proud to offer FEES as one of many new services introduced as part of the hospital’s continued mission to provide quality healthcare locally. To schedule an appointment today, call (607) 865-2100.
