Visitor Restrictions: UHS Wilson Medical Center, UHS Binghamton General Hospital

April 24, 2020

You and your family’s health, safety and well-being are of utmost importance to us at UHS. In an effort to maintain everyone’s safety, reduce the risk to our patients, providers and staff during COVID-19 and be consistent with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) guidelines, a number of visitor restrictions are in place.

UHS is restricting visitors from the following facilities (including the emergency departments):

-UHS Wilson Medical Center
-UHS Binghamton General Hospital

Some exceptions may apply as determined by the caregiving team. Exceptions include:

  • Beginning of Life, End of Life, and pediatric patients.
  • Patients for whom support persons have been determined to be essential (medically necessary) to their care/treatment plan.

If visitation is permitted, the following are expectations and guidelines:
  • All visitors/support persons presenting to our entrances will be screened.
  • Visitor/support person will report to the nurses’ station of the unit they are visiting.  Nursing staff will take the visitor’s temperature before the person enters the clinical area and every 12 hours afterwards as long as the visitor remains at the patient’s bedside.
  • Visitor/support person is required to wear a cloth or surgical mask in our facility at all times.
  • Visitor/support person is asked to practice appropriate hand hygiene and social distancing of six feet apart.
  • Visitor/support person must remain in the patient’s room except when entering or leaving the hospital.
  • In some areas, nursing staff may direct the visitor to wear personal protective equipment, such as a mask, gloves and gown.
  • No visitor/support person presenting with a fever, sore throat, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches or diarrhea will be allowed to visit.
  • No visitor/support person that have been in close contact with anyone who has been laboratory-confirmed as positive for COVID-19 will be allowed to visit.
  • Children under the age of 18 are not allowed to visit.
  • An individual age 70 or older is not encouraged to be a support person for a patient at this time due to their increased risk of Coronavirus infection.
  • When a patient is discharged, only one individual may come to the main entrance to pick up the patient.

We understand this is not an easy or welcome transition. UHS is working around the clock to stay on top of the evolving COVID-19 situation to ensure excellent patient care, patient and visitor safety, and the safety of our workforce. We will keep you updated as NYSDOH guidelines change.  Please know this is to ensure everyone’s safety during this COVID-19 pandemic. Every effort will be made utilizing technology to connect you with your loved one whenever possible. We thank you for your cooperation as we protect our community, patients and healthcare team.
