UHS helps agency store Meals on Wheels

March 30, 2020

UHS this week will begin storing some of the Meals on Wheels provided to elderly residents of Broome County by the Office for Aging.

During the COVID-19 crisis, the agency asked UHS Food & Nutrition at UHS if there was any freezer space available at the hospitals to store up to 1,000 meals.

"We made room in our larger freezer to free up about 75 square feet of space to hold meals on site," said Chris Zduniak, system director of Food & Nutrition.

The Broome County Office for Aging’s Meals on Wheels is a home-delivered meal service available to eligible seniors who are unable to regularly prepare healthful meals for themselves.

Participants overwhelmingly report a better sense of well-being and independence as a result of receiving Meals on Wheels.

Meals are stored frozen, but then heated and delivered Monday through Friday by caring volunteers who not only provide the meal but also check on participants each day.

Each senior receives the hot meal for lunch, a juice and a dessert. Bread and milk are also provided. Each meal is prepared to meet one-third of dietary requirements.
