UHS Foundation helps provide support to grieving families

September 12, 2019

The UHS Fetal Demise and Bereavement Program extends support and services to maternity patients and family members experiencing the loss of an infant.  The program is led by Danielle Caviness, RN, Surgical Stepdown Unit and South Tower 4, and Monica Lorenc, RN, Labor & Delivery, UHS Wilson.

In addition to emotional support and bereavement materials, a pillar of the program is the CuddleCot.  The CuddleCot is a self-cooling bassinet that preserves a deceased infant’s body that allows the baby to stay with the family for as long as needed.  Families can take their time bonding with the baby—taking pictures, holding the baby, etc.  UHS will be the first hospital in the region to provide this level of support for bereaved families.

The UHS Foundation provided funding for the CuddleCot through its discretionary grants program.  Funding requests of up to $2,500 can be submitted throughout the year.  Applications are available on the UHS Foundation department site.
