Sensible Precautions Will Help You Avoid COVID-19

March 26, 2020

Your friends at UHS Cardiology want you to know that we are on your side and here for you during this time of concern in light of COVID-19.  We are providing the following information to reassure you and help you make the right decisions related to your health.  Please remember that your safety and well-being are our top priorities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those who have a higher chance of getting very sick include persons older than 60 (with those 80 and older being at the highest risk), and those with heart or lung disease.

The major symptoms of the disease are fever, cough and shortness of breath.  If you experience these, call your healthcare provider’s office right away.

If you have a heart condition, you should take extra care to protect yourself during this outbreak:

  • Avoid people who are sick
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze (it’s best to sneeze into the inside of your elbow)
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Clean any surfaces touched often, such as doorknobs, handles, steering wheels and light switches
  • Limit travel
  • Practice social distancing (try to stay six feet away from others)

Some other preventive actions you can take:

  • Call your healthcare provider and ask about doing a remote or virtual visit instead of an in-person one
  • Eat healthy, exercise, get enough sleep and reduce your stress level

Treatment for a viral infection typically involves staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest.

If you have heart failure, excess fluid may be a concern, so ask your physician or advanced practice provider about extra monitoring you may need.  Don’t change your medications without first talking with your provider.

By remaining vigilant and following the precautions described above, you will be doing all you can to stay healthy in the weeks and months ahead.

Thank you for choosing UHS Cardiology for your medical needs, and for putting your trust in UHS.
