Recovered COVID patient discharged to applause

May 06, 2020

A large number of UHS staff lined the hallways of UHS Binghamton General Hospital today to bid a fond farewell to a COVID-19 survivor as she was discharged to her home.

Sandra Polakovich was first hospitalized with the disease just a few days after the virus took the life of her husband, William, in March.

Hospital staff gathered on Krembs and Memorial 1 on May 6, with social distancing in place, to wish her well and treat her to a long round of applause as she left the hospital.

Mrs. Polakovich was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at UHS Wilson Medical Center on March 27, and placed on a ventilator for four days before being discharged to quarantine at home. On April 19 she was readmitted to UHS Wilson, then transferred on April 27 to Inpatient Rehabilitation at UHS Binghamton General.

On May 4, two days after her birthday, her COVID-19 test came back negative, and she was removed from isolation to the cheers and applause of the staff members who were caring for her.
