people walkingPerhaps walking to stay in shape is one of your New Year's resolutions. If so, it can be hard to stay with it as the cold gloomy days of winter set in after the first of the year.

Mall-walking can be a great solution.

If mall-walking is in your plans, the UHS Stay Healthy Center at the Oakdale Mall is a great place to start. You can pick up a “B.C. Walks the Mall” pamphlet that describes the indoor walking circuit: a full trip around is three-quarters of a mile.

As an indoor-mall-walker, you’ll beat the chill of winter, the heat of summer and the wet of rainy days, all while still getting your exercise at your own pace.

You’ll be able to increase or decrease that pace according to your limitations and goals, walking alone or with a friend or relative.

The mall opens at 7 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and at 8 a.m. Sunday. Just go in and start walking – it’s free and fun.

Before beginning any exercise program, check with your doctor or other healthcare provider to learn what’s safe and right for you.
