Breast cancer survivors to share stories at Women’s Health talk on October 22

Mother. Wife. Daughter. Sister. Grandmother. Cousin. Friend. Business Owner. All these and more can be used to describe Kathie Turner Holt. Every October, however, she reminds those she knows and loves of another badge she wears: Breast cancer survivor.

“This month is extra special for me,” Holt said. Not only is it Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but it’s also the month when, at the age of 38, the Sherburne resident discovered a lump in her breast.

Now, 21 years later, Holt has a simple, yet impassioned message for other women.

“If you feel something, get it checked,” she said. “Mine was an aggressive form of cancer. Had I waited, who knows?”

Holt admits that she discovered her own lump by chance, but has since become an advocate for both self-breast exams and annual mammograms. She said she gets frustrated when others tell her they are afraid to have a mammogram or that they’ve felt something but put off going to the doctor.

“That drives me insane,” she said. “Early detection is key. The reason I’m here today is because I caught it early.”

Holt and fellow breast cancer survivor Patty Roma will share their stories as part of a special installment of UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital’s 2019 Women’s Health Series on Tuesday, October 22 at Bohemian Moon, 103 W. Main Street in Norwich. An optional buffet and cash bar will be available at 6 p.m., with the presentation and discussion to start at 7 p.m.

They will be joined by Physician Assistant Alyssa MacIntosh of UHS Women’s Health Center in Norwich. MacIntosh’s presentation will cover a number of aspects of breast health, including the anatomy of the breast, screening tools and when they should be employed, the implications of genetics on breast health, abnormalities and more.

“Breasts are part of our identity as women,” MacIntosh explained. “It’s important to know your body well enough to advocate for yourself and your health.”

According to UHS Chenango Memorial’s Jamie Hagenbuch, who coordinates the series, the format for the evening’s program will encourage discussion and conversation.

“This series is about connecting women with information that’s relevant to them, and giving them the opportunity to learn from both health care professionals and from each other,” Hagenbuch said.
