Find a Surgeon
At UHS, our medical staff includes dozens of surgeons spread across a range of subspecialties and cities, including Binghamton, Johnson City, Walton, Norwich, and Endicott, NY. Our directory of physicians includes surgeons listed by subspecialty and provides information on where these physicians attended medical school and completed their surgical residencies, as well as their specialties, areas of interest, board certifications, office locations (including addresses and phone numbers) and website addresses.
What is a surgeon?
A surgeon is a physician who, after medical school, has completed additional training in an accredited residency program to learn the specialized surgery skills needed to operate on a patient. A general surgeon is a physician who has been educated and trained in the diagnosis and preoperative, operative and postoperative management of patient care. Surgery requires comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, emergency and intensive care, immunology, metabolism, nutrition, pathology, physiology, shock and resuscitation, and wound healing. Many surgeons choose to specialize in a particular area of surgery.
What is board certification?
For a physician to become board certified in a surgical specialty, he/she must complete the required years of residency training in that specialty, and then demonstrate his/her knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous comprehensive examination. Specialty boards certify physicians that meet certain published standards.
