Important Reminders Regarding UHS Operations during the Upcoming Winter Storm

The National Weather Service is predicting that a significant winter storm will impact our service area beginning Saturday afternoon. Forecasted snowfall accumulations range between 12” and 18” for the Binghamton area, with up to 24" possible in Norwich. The snow is anticipated to last into Sunday evening.
During the storm, it is important to remember the following key points regarding UHS operations:

  • All UHS facilities, including the Walk-Ins, will remain open unless otherwise determined and communicated by Senior Management.
  • Normal schedules and operations will remain in effect for all locations unless otherwise determined and communicated by Senior Management.
  • In the event that state or county officials issue a State of Emergency that includes a “Travel Advisory or Travel Ban,” UHS employees may use roadways for travel to and from work. Employee badges have the following “Disaster Pass” on the reverse side:
    • “Disaster Pass; Please pass bearer through emergency, police or fire lines.”
  • In the event that an employee prefers not to travel to/from work and would rather sleep at either UHS Wilson Medical Center or UHS Binghamton General Hospital, accommodations can be made. Employees may reserve these accommodations in advance by contacting 607-763-6602.
  • The Hospital Command Center at UHS Binghamton General Hospital will be opened from 6:00 p.m. Saturday through 6:00 p.m. Sunday to assist with communication of updates and information, along with managing resources for the transportation of Mission Critical staff. If the weather event is not as severe as anticipated, the Command Center may close earlier. This will be communicated to staff.
  • Employees are urged to preplan and allow for additional travel time to ensure their safety.
  • Clinical staff should contact the Nursing Supervisor at their assigned site in the event that they are unable to make it to work.
  • Ancillary and Support staff should contact their Leadership team in the event they are unable to make it to work.
  • Requests for transportation will be prioritized based on staffing levels, and forwarded to the Command Center.
  • When activated, the UHS Binghamton General Hospital Command Center can be reached at 607-762-2017, or for internal dial at extension 22017.
  • Effective immediately, the gate on the Parking Garage at UHS Wilson Medical Center will be opened. The garage will be available for undercover parking by all employees through Monday at 5:00 a.m.
  • Managers and Supervisors are asked to review and revise staffing and on-call schedules for their departments in advance of the storm to ensure that appropriate staffing levels are available.
  • Additional updates will be posted throughout the storm to the UHS public website at nyuhs.org (since many staff can not access the intranet from home) and through the Alertus Mobile App.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Stephen Smith (Administrative Lead, Emergency management) at 607-762-3934.
