Leaders show off footwear to support 'Sock Out Cancer'
UHS Hospitals managers and supervisors wore their multi-colored “Sock Out Cancer” socks when they attended the Leadership Team meeting March 12 in the Russell Room at UHS Binghamton General.
This was done to demonstrate UHS' support for the Sock Out Cancer initiative.
Socks were sold at the event by UHS Foundation staff. The socks also are available at the UHS Wilson and UHS Binghamton General gift shops, online at sockoutcancer.org, at Wegmans in Johnson City and at area Mirabito Convenience Stores.
Sock Out Cancer was formed especially to help families in the Southern Tier who are coping with the financial challenges of cancer and all its implications. The annual project is a joint endeavor of the UHS Foundation and other groups in the community.
In addition to sock sales, a benefit concert will be held on Friday, April 12, at 8 p.m. at The Forum in downtown Binghamton. This year’s concert will feature music from one of the greatest decades in rock and pop - the 1980s – including songs that hark back to two of the era’s most prominent bands, Santana and Journey.
Performing some of these bands’ chart-topping hits will be none other than Alex Ligertwood, former lead singer for Santana, and Kevin Chalfant, who has performed on stage as lead vocalist with Journey.
Tickets are available via Ticketmaster and at the Arena box office.
Proceeds help patients and their loved ones deal with the everyday needs of coping with a life-changing condition. During cancer treatment, many patients have to reduce their work hours or stop working altogether, which can result in a real hardship on the whole family.
Sock Out Cancer provides financial assistance toward rent, utilities, groceries, transportation and other necessities. The money received can buoy a patient’s spirit as well.
As one patient recently said: “Not only is Sock Out Cancer a great asset to our community, it sends a message of lightness, good cheer and many smiles.”
