Greater Norwich Foundation gift pushes UHS Chenango Memorial Capital Campaign over the $2.5M mark

A gift from the Greater Norwich Foundation has pushed the Chenango Memorial Hospital capital campaign past the $2.5 million mark.

“The trustees of the Greater Norwich Foundation have approved a grant in the amount of $500,000, to be paid over the next five years,” said James I. Dunne, chairman of the Foundation’s board of trustees. “The first payment of $100,000 is given in memory of Jane F. Curran.”

Dunne and his fellow trustees visited UHS Chenango Memorial to present a ceremonial check in the amount of the five year pledge. This is not the first time the foundation has supported the hospital, but rather part of a continued commitment to the Norwich hospital.

“The Greater Norwich Foundation has recognized the importance of Chenango Memorial Hospital to our community for many years,” Dunne said. “During the 10 years before our 2019 commitment, a total of $695,000 was pledged and paid to the hospital by the Foundation. It is the most important grant that we award each year, and we have confidence it will be used for the benefit of the Greater Norwich community.”

NBT Bank Chairman Martin Dietrich, who has stepped forward to chair the capital campaign, expressed gratitude to the Foundation and its trustees.

“For the last 50 years, the Greater Norwich Foundation has quietly but actively fulfilled its mission to support local charitable organizations in their efforts to enrich this community,” Dietrich said. “We are very fortunate that Chenango Memorial has been one of institutions they have chosen to support for many years. We are particularly grateful for their leadership gift to this capital campaign, which is the hospital’s first in close to three decades.”

According to the campaign chair, funds raised during the capital campaign will support construction of a new Emergency Room and Walk-In Center, as well as strategic investments in Diagnostic Imaging and infrastructure to support the growth of future services. The work is part of the first phase of the hospital’s Chenango Medical Neighborhood Plan, which will transform the delivery of care at UHS Chenango Memorial.

“These are investments that will improve the health of our community, and ensure the sustainability and vitality of our hospital for generations to come,” Dietrich said.
