We recognize Rehab pros during National Rehabilitation Awareness Celebration Week

September 14, 2018

The Sandiford Rehabilitation Center and the Transitional Care Unit at UHS are celebrating National Rehabilitation Specialty during the month of September. Physical, Occupational, Speech and Recreational Therapists and Social Workers, Rehab Nurses, NPs and Physiatrists are all part of our UHS interdisciplinary professional team.

Each one of the professional team has a unique perspective about the patient to help achieve the goal for a patient to integrate back into their community. We have a weekly interdisciplinary team meeting with our patients and family members/caregivers goals in mind. We develop a plan of care maximizing restoration to their previous lives and hopefully attain independence again.

Dr. Caramore, a Board Certified Physiatrist, is the UHS Medical Director for physical medicine at Sandiford Rehabilitation Center (SRC.) The rehab unit services patients suffering from numerous conditions including strokes, brain injury, cancer, respiratory and cardiac diseases, spinal cord injury, multiple trauma injury and amputations, which can cause a patient to become deconditioned and a reason for consultation.

The Specialty of Rehabilitation is rewarding. All of us take it seriously. It is a philosophy of care. We are educators, collaborators, care coordinators, and advocators meeting the patient in need. Seeing patients progress is our passion – we work together to make lives better. Professionals practice rehabilitation in the community; in the patients' homes and nursing homes.

National Rehabilitation Awareness Celebration Week, is Sept. 16 to 22. The national observance seeks to increase public understanding of rehabilitation and the value that the Rehab team brings to the hospital, nursing home and home care environment.
