UHS Sleep Center earns re-accreditation

October 03, 2018

The UHS Sleep Center has earned a five-year re-accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), effective Dec. 5. The Sleep Center earned its original accreditation from the AASM in 2003; only 2,500 centers nationwide hold this accreditation, which is required for billing Medicare.

Earning re-accreditation took six months of data and report collection and involved multiple departments. It culminated in an online application outlining updated practice policies specific to sleep, as well as volume and facility information, staff credentialing and accreditation data, office blueprints, and evidence of a Quarterly Quality Assurance program with documented patient data showing that clinical metrics are being met.

Said UHS Sleep & Neurodiagnostic Center physician practice supervisor Brian Drake, “To say this is important would be an understatement. This was a true UHS team effort.”

The final portion of the reaccreditation process is a site visit sometime before August 2019. This one-day visit will be conducted by one or two AASM staff members, such as a medical director or accreditation coordinator.

The center is staffed by board-certified sleep specialist and Sleep Center medical director Maciej Nowakowski, MD, and nurse practitioner Leanne Morrell. Services include office visits, daytime in-house sleep studies and home sleep tests. Primary diagnoses treated include sleep apnea, restless-leg syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia, hypersomnia and more. Unique in the area, the Sleep Center offers lab services in addition to provider office visits.

Said Dr. Nowakowski, “Our recent reaccreditation proves our continuous commitment to providing the highest quality, evidence-based care to our patients."

Founded several years ago, the UHS Sleep Center is located at 93 Pennsylvania Ave. in Binghamton, and logs about 8,000 patient encounters per year.  For more information about the center, visit www.nyuhs.org.
