Sock Out's Earth Harp concert raises $110,000

May 15, 2018

Hundreds of people from around the community attended Sock Out Cancer’s special concert at The Forum Friday night, with the event raising $110,000 to benefit oncology patients in the Southern Tier.

The amount surpassed the goal of the event, which was $100,000.

The funds were split evenly between the UHS and Lourdes foundations, which will pass the money on to financially distressed cancer patients and their families. Sock Out Cancer provides dollars specifically for non-medical needs, such as transportation, groceries, rent or mortgage payments.

Friday night’s concert featured the internationally renowned William Close & The Earth Harp Collective.  The stunning centerpiece of the concert was the “Earth Harp,” an instrument invented by Mr. Close.

Mr. Close and his touring show have received ovations worldwide for their original hybrid of classical and contemporary music. Mr. Close was a finalist on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and is credited with creating the world’s largest stringed instrument.

UHS gave 25 free concert tickets to oncology patients.

So far this year, 17 UHS patients have received Sock Out Cancer funding.

The UHS and Lourdes foundations raise Sock Out Cancer money through the concert, additional donations and the net proceeds from the sale of multi-colored socks symbolizing the fight against cancer in all its forms.
