Crowds turn out for Annika and Golf Expo

The sunshine and Annika Sorenstam brought out the crowds Wednesday for UHS’ 2018 Golf Expo at the En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott.  A total of 840 people registered to attend the event, which featured a golf clinic by Ms. Sorenstam and health education displays by UHS clinicians.

UHS provided educational materials related to urology, orthopedics and men’s and women’s health issues.  Providers and clinical experts from several specialties were on hand starting at 5 p.m. for informal question-and-answer sessions under a large UHS tent.

Free, heart-healthy refreshments were available, along with gift cards and chances to win prizes.

UHS urologist Nick Liu, MD, said the Expo is an important way UHS connects with the Southern Tier community, offering insights into health resources and wellness opportunities.

“We believe it’s important for our community to have access to the latest advances in specialty care,” he said.  “By staying in tune with their health - and connecting with the right kind of quality care - all persons can greatly improve their chances of early detection of disease, proper treatment and the best possible outcome and recovery.”

John Carrigg, president and chief executive officer of UHS, noted:  “We are very pleased with the record turnout for this annual event.  Our aim is to make this day as valuable for everyone as possible.”

Continuing, Mr. Carrigg said:  “This year we are especially excited to have with us Annika Sorenstam, a truly world-class golf professional as our guest of honor.”

Regarded as one of the best golfers in history, she has won 90 international tournaments as a professional, making her the female golfer with the most wins to her name.  She has won 72 official LPGA tournaments, including 10 majors and 18 others.

Winner of a record eight "Player of the Year" awards and six Vare Trophies given to the LPGA player with the lowest seasonal scoring average, she is the only woman in golf to have shot a 59 in competition.  She holds various all-time scoring records, including the lowest season-scoring average.

Since her 2008 retirement from the professional circuit, Ms. Sorenstam has combined her sports expertise with interests in promoting fitness and supporting charitable endeavors.

For several years, UHS has held the special health and fitness exposition in connection with the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.  It continues to gain in popularity, with women, men and youngsters of all ages attending.
