numbers that say 2018 and the zero has a clock inside of itIf the goal of your New Year's resolution is to stay hale and hearty, plus safe and secure at the same time, here are six tips for making wellness a reality in 2018.

  1. Get a handle on stress. Give yourself a break whenever you feel stressed out, overwhelmed or out of control. Find support among family or friends and connect socially.
  2. Get enough rest. Sleep may seem like a waste of time, but those unconscious hours are actually a time when your body does its job to recover from damage and protect itself against illness. Most people need seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
  3. Don't drink and drive or let those around you do. If you use tobacco, get into a smoking cessation program such as the one offered by UHS Stay Healthy.
  4. When driving or riding in a car, fasten your safety belt and make sure others in your vehicle are buckled up as well. Children should use a safety seat, booster seat or seatbelt, according to their height, weight and age.
  5. Practice fire safety at home, work and school. Don't leave fireplaces, space heater, stoves or candles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly.
  6. Get the exams, checkups and screenings that are right for you. Talk with your doctor or other healthcare provider about which ones you need and when to get them and, while you're at it, update your personal and family medical histories.
