Golf pro Nancy Lopez to speak at UHS event Aug. 26

Athletic insights and motivational ideas will be the order of the day when world-renowned golfer Nancy Lopez comes to Greater Binghamton on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

"The UHS Golf Expo with Nancy Lopez" will be held at the En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott, with health exhibits starting at 4:30 p.m., a news conference at 6 and a golf presentation by Ms. Lopez at 6:30.

All details can be found here on

News media are invited to attend the event; for additional information, call Jon Tooley, UHS Community Relations, 762-2336.

The event is a kickoff to the Dick's Sporting Goods Open Golf Tournament.

People from across the community will be able to view health information exhibits and attend Ms. Lopez's golf presentation, gaining invaluable tips on how to improve their golf games and their orthopedic health.

Displays will feature activities to help people stay fit and remain active at any stage of life.

Also, surgeons and other UHS clinical experts will be on hand to present information about sports medicine, hip and knee replacement and other advances in orthopedic care.

Each attendee will receive giveaways, and there will be prize drawings and heart-healthy refreshments.

"This event has been enormously popular for the past two years, with a record attendance, and we're planning many exciting activities for this year," said Christina Boyd, vice president for Community Relations at UHS. "It's a wonderful opportunity for anyone in our community to learn about good health and good golf, and see a legendary athlete in person."

With 48 LPGA Tour victories and three major championships to her credit, Ms. Lopez is a World Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the most celebrated women in the sport of professional golf today.

In 1978 she became the only LPGA Tour member to win Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy in the same season.

In the decade following her Rookie of the Year designation, she amassed the 48 wins and their championships, and was named Player of the Year four times.

Today Ms. Lopez actively works to promote public awareness of many medical issues, such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease, which run in her family, and is a generous supporter of cancer and heart disease research.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Open of the Champions Tour will be held Aug. 28 through 30.
