Think Pink this October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the month the UHS Breast Center will be working to raise breast health awareness and promote education and research.

October is a good a time to get your annual mammogram. If you get one at the UHS Breast Center during the month, you will receive a free cosmetics bag. For more information on scheduling your mammogram, go to nyuhs.org.

The Breast Center will also be partnering with other organizations to raise money for the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk and the “Sock Out Cancer” presentation. Here are some of these preliminary events:

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Theme-Basket Drawing

A drawing will be held for gift baskets created and donated by various UHS departments. You can purchase drawing tickets to win one of the fantastic baskets at these locations:

•UHS Wilson Square Lobby, Harrison Street, Johnson City – Sept. 30, Oct.2, & Oct. 3 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

•UHS Lewis Road – Oct. 8 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

•UHS Binghamton General Hospital Cafeteria – Oct. 10 & 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

•UHS Vestal – Oct. 14 through Oct. 18 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Cider Mill Pink Donut Day

On Friday, Oct. 4, from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., purchase a pink donut at the Cider Mill and a percentage of proceeds will be donated to Making Strides and Sock Out Cancer.

Early detection information will also be available.

Lost Dog Cafe "Pink Drink" Fundraiser

For the entire month of October, when you buy Lost Dog Cafe's specialty "pink drink," a portion of the proceeds will benefit Making Strides and Sock Out Cancer.

Also, on Friday, Oct. 4, from 5-7 p.m., join the UHS Breast Center to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lost Dog will be selling T-shirts, with proceeds benefiting Making Strides and Sock Out Cancer.

UHS Breast Center Guest Bartending at Social On State

On Oct. 16 from 5-8 p.m., UHS Breast Center staff members will be guest-bartending at the Social on State tavern on State Street in Binghamton.

Tips made at the event will be donated to Making Strides and Sock Out Cancer.  

Guest bartenders will include:  John Carrigg, president and chief executive officer, UHS; Colleen O’Kelly Priddy, MD, breast surgeon; Nathan Goldman, MD, radiation oncologist; Shannan Leonard, nurse practitioner, Breast Surgery; Jennifer Gusse, director, Oncology Services; Jennifer Zeggert, manager, Oncology Services; and Julia Mack, RN, nurse navigator, Breast Center.

Stay in the pink

Join the UHS Breast Center by wearing Pink on Fridays in October for breast cancer awareness. Mark your calendars for Fridays:  Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25!

Hit your stride!

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will take place Sunday, Oct. 20, at Recreation Park in Binghamton. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m.
