Healing power of healthcare celebrated during national recognition observances

May 03, 2019

National Hospital Week is May 12 to 18. This special time of year is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the hope and healing that hospitals and hospital professionals make possible through their dedication and care from the heart. Hospitals have a large impact on their communities, both on the health status of residents and the economic well-being of the regions they serve.

In celebrating Hospital Week, UHS offers appreciation to the people of UHS Wilson Medical Center and UHS Binghamton General, UHS Chenango Memorial and UHS Delaware Valley hospitals who make a difference in so many lives every day of the year.

Interesting Fact: National Hospital Week always falls in the week (Sunday-Saturday) of Florence Nightingale’s birthday (May 12). For future Hospital Week observances, be sure to save these dates: National Hospital Week 2020 is May 10 to 16, and National Hospital Week 2021 is May 2 to 8.

Nurses’ role highlighted with special day and week

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 (National Nurses Day) through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

This year's theme is "4 Million Reasons to Celebrate," a reference to the four million registered nurses actively providing care and service across the United States today. And the theme of the annual Nurses Day breakfast of the Professional Nurses Association of South Central New York is “Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring.”

'Living Soulfully' is theme for skilled nursing centers

The American Health Care Association has designated “Live Soulfully” as the 2019 theme for National Skilled Nursing Care Week 2019, to be observed from May 12 to 18. The theme celebrates skilled nursing centers and their residents and staff by showcasing how they achieve happy minds and healthy souls.
Whether it’s encouraging residents in planting, cooking, reading or listening to music, these centers pay it forward by helping individuals find happiness to improve their quality of life. Started in 1967, the observance, formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, recognizes the essential role of these centers in caring for America’s frail, elderly and disabled.

This is a good time to thank a member of the UHS Senior Living team at Ideal or at Chenango Memorial for their contributions to quality care.

UHS recognizes auxilians for invaluable service

UHS salutes the many members of its hospital auxiliaries on May 1, Healthcare Auxilian Day in New York State. During the past year, members of the Auxiliaries at UHS Hospitals gave thousands of hours of volunteer service by holding vendor sales, managing the gift shops, delivering flowers to patient rooms and otherwise assisting at UHS Wilson and UHS Binghamton General.

Auxilians also contributed hours and cheerfulness at UHS Chenango Memorial, UHS Delaware Valley and UHS Senior Living at Ideal. The auxilians raised tens of thousands of dollars in support of patient care and service and scholarships in the healthcare field.

New York is home to more than 75,000 healthcare auxilians who initiate, fund and volunteer in connection with a wide variety of patient and family care services, from inpatient units to outpatient clinics to nursing homes.

UHS is a locally owned, not-for-profit hospital and healthcare system serving Greater Binghamton and surrounding counties. Founded in 1981, UHS provides a full range of medical, surgical, rehabilitative and long-term care services throughout New York’s Southern Tier.
