UHS supports ‘Baby’s First Book’ program

March 06, 2018

UHS is supporting an effort to help children develop language skills from a very early age – as soon as they’re born, to be exact!

“Baby’s First Book” is a program developed by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, in partnership with the Children’s Reading Connection, SUNY Broome’s Center for Civic Engagement, Staples, the Susquehanna River Region of 2-1-1, Lourdes Ascension and UHS.

The program aims to provide a gift book, “Baby Cakes,” to every baby born in Broome County starting this month.

Authored by Karma Wilson, the book presents the message that early language experiences in the arms of loved ones are how infants’ and children’s brains are nourished.

The program is part of the Literary Legacy Project of Broome County, which is committed to ensuring that every parent is aware of the importance of playing, talking, singing and reading with their children every day, beginning at birth.

County Executive Garnar has committed to providing funding for the “Baby Cakes” gift book distribution, announced March 6 at the George F. Johnson Memorial Library in Endicott.
