Safe removal of sports equipment is topic

May 07, 2018

The third annual Spring Sports Injury Management and Equipment Removal Training Program will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 12, in the Tau Room at the Binghamton University Events Center.

The training session will be presented by three members of the UHS Sports Medicine team:  Stanley Hunter, MD; Jill Sadoski, MD; and Micah Lissy, MD.

"The course is designed to provide hands-on education for first-responders, covering providers, therapists, athletic trainers, coaches and related professionals," said Dr. Lissy, who will kick off the event with a brief presentation.

The course will focus on caring for the athlete who has suffered a severe sports injury, including the pre-hospital removal of helmets, pads and other contact-sport equipment.

The goal is to conduct a proper assessment of the injured athlete and remove equipment in a safe way to avoid aggravating the injury.

A former emergency medical technician, Dr. Lissy is a sports medicine fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has provided care to members of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings professional sports teams.

Currently he is director of Sports Medicine at UHS and team physician for the Binghamton University Bearcats.

The training is presented in cooperation with Binghamton University and SUNY Broome.

Dr. Lissy noted:  "It integrates local emergency medical services with local physicians to improve communication and review the new emergency medical guidelines."
