Tobacco cessation sessions to begin at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital

July 07, 2017

UHS Delaware Valley Hospital’s cardiopulmonary staff members will begin facilitating tobacco cessation sessions for anyone who uses any form of tobacco and is interested in quitting. Using the American Cancer Society’s Fresh Start program, participants will be guided, over the course of four weeks, through steps to help them kick the nicotine habit.

Some of the highlights from each week’s session: “Deciding to Quit,” includes: week one provides information to help participants understand nicotine addiction, how behavior change can help make quitting successful, and the immediate and long-term benefits of quitting. In week two, “Plan to Quit,” everyone will explore past attempts at quitting and what worked, what didn’t, exploring the different methods of quitting and the types of medications that may help, and understanding the need for social support. Week three focuses on “Your Quit Day,” and shares tips, symptoms and how to deal with them, how rationalizations can sabotage quit attempts and how to avoid temptation and the importance of effective stress management. The final week, “Staying Quit,” teaches how to recover from a slip, and why this differs from a relapse, how to deal with tough situations, concerns about weight gain and your health after quitting and a review of tips.

Sessions will be held quarterly in the UHS Delaware Valley Hospital, Ambulatory Services waiting room from 6-7 PM beginning July 19. To register for the sessions, please call the hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Department at 607-865-2126 or on-line here.
