UHS Presents Free Diabetes Information Program in Sidney

UHS will present a free diabetes information program at the Civic Center, 21 Liberty Street in Sidney, Thursday, May 22.  Registration begins at 5 p.m. and presentations begin at 5:30. This annual event, on the second floor of the Civic Center, is open to diabetics and their families and will feature the latest information about diabetes.

With diabetes affecting nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States and an additional 79 million Americans with prediabetes putting them at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, this subject is very important nationwide.  “The fact is that in upstate New York, the risk factors for this disease are even more pronounced than in other areas of the nation.  This is why these free informational programs are particularly important, and why UHS presents them each year,” stated UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital’s diabetes educator Pam Lyons, RN, CDE, who coordinates the annual event in Sidney.

The program will feature local healthcare professionals who will provide a wide range of information that is valuable to diabetics and their families.  Subjects will include an update on the latest news about diabetes; information on diabetes and nutrition by UHS Delaware Valley Hospital certified dietitian-nutritionist Cathy McLachlan; the impact of diabetes on gum health by UHS Dental Center dentist Barbara Gruchalska, DDS; and understanding the diabetes care plan – for the care partner by Melissa Entenmann MS,RD, CDN, CDE.

There will be light refreshments, door prizes and give-aways. Vendors who specialize in products and services for diabetics will be on hand with displays as well.  Space is limited and reservations are requested. Please call 337-4040 to reserve your space or register on line at
