Cardiac nurse coordinator to guide patients at UHS

UHS has appointed a nurse specially trained to guide patients and their families as they make treatment decisions related to heart care.

Melody Barton, RN, is the new cardiac nurse coordinator at the UHS Heart Institute.

"Our dedicated and highly skilled team of heart specialists already provides the most advanced  diagnostic and treatment services for heart care available in the area," said Matthew J. Salanger, president and chief executive officer of UHS.  "To enhance these services, we have added a cardiac nurse coordinator to make the patient’s experience less stressful and provide even more personalized and seamless coordination of care."

Ms. Barton, who has worked at UHS since 2005, has extensive nursing experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  She enjoys patient education and counseling and is looking forward to supporting and guiding patients and their families as they journey through the healthcare system.

“I understand that timely communication, reassurance and knowing what to expect are important in each patient’s encounters," Ms. Barton said.  "My job is to make sure that patients and their families are informed and prepared, that they understand their options and next steps, and that their needs are met for optimal health outcomes.”

In the new post, she will help to coordinate and schedule tests and services to ensure prompt treatment; refer patients to support services, including cardiac rehabilitation, educational programs, support groups and smoking cessation courses as needed; and serve as a key point of contact with referring physicians.
