A Greater Binghamton doctor known throughout the region for her dedication to quality in women’s healthcare is the recipient of the UHS Foundation’s 2013 Women Health Leadership Award.

Obstetrician/gynecologist Nancy Shumeyko, MD, is described by her nominator as a “promoter of good health” for women and an “advocate for every single one of her patients.”

She was also one of the pioneering female surgeons in the community, and as such had to prove herself every step of the way, the nominator commented.

“She quickly did more than that,” the writer noted.  “She became a recognized leader among her peers and a mentor for other women” in the medical profession in the Southern Tier.

The 2013 honor will be presented to Dr. Shumeyko on Friday, Sept. 6, during the banquet at the Foundation’s annual Women Fore Women Golf Classic at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin.

A member of the UHS Hospitals Medical Staff, Dr. Shumeyko practices at UHS Gynecology in Vestal.  She specializes in complex women’s medical care, with a special focus on urogynecology, hormone replacement therapy and laparoscopic surgery.

Board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, she received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed specialty training at Emory University in Atlanta.

The Foundation has presented the award at its golf outing annually since 2004.

The tournament raises community awareness of and significant dollars toward the prevention and treatment of breast cancer and related women's health concerns.

“Each year's award recipient is a healthcare provider, advocate, educator, fundraiser, role model or member of the community at large who is a strong leader and works toward improving women's quality of life,” said Betsy Pietriyk, executive director of the Foundation.  “Dr. Shumeyko exemplifies all of those attributes.”

Previous years' award-winners are as follows: Patricia Fell, RN, ANP, 2012; Kay Boland, RN, 2011; Robin Mead, 2010; Barbara Chaffee, MD, 2009; Connie Naughton, FNP, 2008; Michelle Karedes, 2007; Susan Kost, RN, 2006; Carol Rogers, NP, 2005; and Carol Miller, MD, 2004.
