UHS Residency - Preliminary Year

Our Preliminary Medicine Year Program is affiliated with our ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. It offers outstanding training for programs that require one year training in Internal Medicine, i.e. Neurology or for those residents in which additional experience in Internal Medicine or critical care will enhance their career. Interns in this program will practice in a supportive environment which maximizes professional and personal growth through a solid base of practical skill development and an extensive conference schedule. A full complement of elective time is built into the schedule and tailored to meet the programmatic requirements of your follow-on residency.

Program Highlights include: Procedural training, Hospitalist training, General Medicine Clinic, reasonable call schedule.

Program Director

Thomas GeneseThomas Genese, MD

Title: Program Director; Clinic Director

Residency: Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine Naval Medical Center Portsmouth

Dr. Genese completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1993. Prior to attending medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, he worked in healthcare business strategy, process design, and technology research and development. After completion of medical school in 2002, he attended Internal Medicine residency and Chief Residency at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago, Illinois. He served as the Internal Medicine Associate Program Director at the Yale-affiliated Saint Mary's Hospital in Connecticut through 2012 and was on the Department of Medicine faculty at the University of Illinois in 2014. He then provided consultant services to establish a number of new graduate medical education departments and residency programs prior to joining United Health Services in 2017 as the Internal Medicine Program Director, Transitional Year Program Director, and Clinic Director for Internal Medicine. He is married to Dr. Josephine Genese who is on faculty in Family Medicine at United Health Services. They have three children and live in Vestal, New York. Dr. Genese's primary areas of interest are academic general Internal Medicine, preventative medicine, and Primary Care. His hobbies include information technology and physical activities such as hiking and weight training.

SALARY $56,650 (Year)

Sample Residency Agreement

  • Insurance Coverage
    • Health Insurance: United Health Services is partnered with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) to provide our employees with United Health Services Preferred Provider Organization (UHS PPO). United Health Services covers a major portion of the health insurance premiums. Premiums are deducted bi-weekly from your paycheck.
    • Pharmacy: Prescriptions may be filled through United Health Services, an Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield network pharmacy, or through mail order.
    • Life Insurance: Provided and paid for by the hospital, equal to your annual salary.
    • Malpractice Insurance: Provided and paid for by the hospital.
    • Dental Insurance: Standard and high option dental plans available at shared cost with the hospital.
  • Personal Time Off (vacations, holidays, unexpected absences including illnesses)
    • PGY 1: 18 days
  • Moving Allowance
    • A moving allowance of $300 is provided to each resident.
  • Professional Development Fund
    • Each resident is allotted $750/year to be used for educational expenses and professional fees and/or activities (i.e. books, PDA's, software, stethoscopes, etc.).
  • Academic Appointments
    • All residents receive an academic appointment as a Clinical Assistant Instructor at Upstate Medical University (SUNY), Syracuse, New York.
  • Athletic/Gym Privileges
    • Residents have access to the non-fee based athletic facilities at Binghamton University: gymnasium, weight room, indoor and outdoor tracks, pools, racquetball and tennis courts.
  • Meals
    • Meal allowance provided for residents on call as well as stocked refrigerator in lounges.
